The Adult Learning Department at the DC Public Library is now hiring for an ESL Conversation Circle Facilitator.

$11,200 between October 1, 2024–September 30, 2025 (Fiscal year 2025)

Job Description

The DC Public Library’s Adult Learning Department to lead ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Conversation Circles for adults who have completed an intermediate- to advanced-level of English language learning. This is a part-time, contractor position, awarded annually on a fiscal year basis.

The goal of the ESOL Conversation Circle is to provide opportunities for adults who have previously studied English to improve their speaking, listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary abilities by practicing conversation in an informal library setting. The two-hour sessions are ongoing, with no registration or formal assessment of participants required. The Facilitator is needed twice weekly (Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM) virtually.

Responsibilities

Plan and facilitate twice-weekly instructional sessions for participants that include opportunities for listening, speaking, and vocabulary development in English.
Plan and provide opportunities for cultural enrichment and community engagement.
Maintain attendance records and submit attendance totals for each month.
Informally assess the progress of each student; refer students not appropriate for the Conversation Circle to the Library’s Literacy HelpLine for referral to an ESOL program in the city.
When appropriate, provide homework to reinforce what has been learned/discussed in the session.
Submit quarterly reports on the content and activities of the Conversation Circle for the reporting cycle. Inclusion of photo documentation is encouraged.

Qualifications

Must have knowledge of the principles of adult learning, techniques for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, ESOL instructional materials and strategies, and an awareness of facilitation basics.
Must have at least two years of experience teaching ESOL to adult learners.
Must have experience teaching virtually.
Strong verbal and written skills are necessary, as is the ability to quickly assess the appropriateness of materials.
Knowledge of digital resources and experience working and/or consulting in a library setting is preferred.
